Pussytoes (Antennaria rosea) Pussytoes is a common name for plants in the Antennaria genus of the Sunflower Family. For some reason the word "pussy" has come to be seen as inappropriate in recent years. Although the term originally was just another word for cat and then it became another word for wimp, at some point it also became another word for a female, private body part. In relation to the Antennaria genus, the name pussytoes refers to the resemblance between the plant and the toes or paws of a cat. As for pussy being another word for wimp, that resulted from the phrase two-word term 'fraidy cat. How "pussy" came to be associated with a female, private body part is anyone's guess. However, the common name pussytoes or pussy toes belonging to members of the Antennaria genus should not be considered inappropriate. |
