Language can be confusing and synonyms don't help. However, synonyms do provide ways to help us express our thoughts more precisely. Ironically, although we may think we are explaining ourselves more precisely, if we choose a word which is not known to those listening to us or if those listening to us don't understand the way we are using a word, then a failure to communicate may occur. Assuming that our listeners are acting in good faith, the issue is fairly simple. On the other hand, a problem occurs when listeners intentionally twist our words around and use the ambiguity of language to make a false claim of some kind. Maybe the listeners just pretend to be offended or maybe they file a complaint of some kind, but in any case the listeners are acting in bad faith. While synonyms can be fun and useful and even the basis of many jokes, it is also the case that they can be used as opportunities by those with bad intentions.
