The Wiggles Wiggle, jiggle, shake, twitch, squirm, and twist can all mean about the same thing, but that's all besides the point. This video features animation created in Scratch and although the animation doesn't even begin to push the limits of what Scratch can be used to create, it nonetheless provides an opportunity to opine a bit about the virtues of Scratch. Created by the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab, Scratch is used to teach computer programming (coding) concepts to children. Although the primary purpose of Scratch is educational, the projects that can be created using Scratch are far from trivial. That being said, probably the greatest strength of Scratch is its amazing versatility. Not only can it be used to introduce basic coding skills to eight-year-olds, but even advanced high school students can create challenging projects using it. As the Scratch Team likes to say, Scratch has a low floor, high ceiling, and wide walls. In other words, it can be used from the primary grades through high school and across all curricular areas. Considering all that can be done with Scratch, it might be surprising to learn that it is completely free. For more info go to: scratch.mit.edu |
